Mohali: A professor at a fashion technology institute was arrested on Thursday for allegedly sending obscene SMSes to girl students.
K Krishnamurthy, the head of the textile design course at the government-run Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT), was arrested after some girl students alleged that he used to send them vulgar SMSes.
Police said the professor has been booked for obscenity and for outraging the modesty of a woman. He has been charged under the information technology act as well.
In their complaint to the institute authorities, the girls alleged the teacher used to send them messages expressing his love and even telephoned some of them to express his love.
They alleged that he used to come drunk to the institute and sometimes and passed cheap remarks about them.
The teacher, who was suspended after some students went on strike on Thursday, said that he was not at fault and a few disgruntled students had raked up the charges against him as they had not done well and fallen short of lectures.
He claimed the girls had also been sending him messages on his mobile phone. He said the messages sent by him were as an "advice" to the students.
NIIFT director Vijay Sharma said he had never before received any complaint against the professor.
