CHENNAI: The conviction of retired Lt Colonel K Ramraj by a fast track court on Friday for gunning down Dil-shan (13) last year came as a feather in the cap for the Crime Branch CID police. For, they had no clue initially when the State government transferred the case to them following public uproar. Since there were no eyewitnesses, the sleuths had to gather oral, scientific and circumstantial evidence to establish their charge that it was Ramraj who pulled the trigger.Given the generally low conviction rate, the CB-CID can now afford to pat itself on the back as the court accepted all their charges in the Dilshan case.Addressing the press on Friday, Narinder Pal Singh, ADGP, CB-CID said, “The conviction had brought justice to the boy’s family.” He thanked the State government and the police department for their full support. On the cash penalty the court slapped on Ramraj, M N Manjunatha, IGP, CB-CID, said, “The amount of `50,000 has gone to the victim’s family.” A resident of Indira Gandhi Nagar, Dilshan was shot dead in ‘Old Fort Glacis Officers Enclave’, an army officers quarters located in Fort St George Complex on July 3 last year. The case was transferred to CB-CID and K Ramraj, a retired Lt Colonel, who was permitted to extend his stay in the residential quarters, was arrested on July 9, 2011. Weapons and bullets were recovered and the char-gesheet filed on August 3, 2011 upon completion of investigation. The trial was conducted before V Fast Track Court, Chennai. Out of 74 prosecution witnesses cited, 55 were examined on behalf of the prosecution and one on behalf of the accused.
