Films that you can smell and touch

Berlin: Cinematic voyage or the medium of 'paintings in motion' has just expanded it's horizon.

Films can transport you to amazing places in two dimensions, so imagine what it must be like to experience the cinematic voyage in not three, nor four, but five dimensions.

A cinema chain in Germany - CineStar Berlin - is doing just that with the country's first 5D cinema in Berlin. So its not only about witnessing those exotic locales and hearing that melodious tune.

Now you can smell the flower or feel touch.

Nikolas Schelly, who saw the 5D film says, "I thought the chair vibrating was strange but my favourite part was when the little people jumped right out of the screen and the seat went back and forth."

These theatres are no ordinary theatres. Hidden behind its facade is a world of make believe in 5 dimensions. With state-of-the-art technology, control room computers choreograph the vision with movement and smells.

Daniel Sibbers of CineStar Berlin says, "You have 3D glasses where you can see the third dimension but our films are enriched with smell and movement. You sit in sensory seats. Nothing moves but the seats keep people moving. And then there is the sensation of smell. If you approach a flower, you will smell that flower."

The technology was developed in Austria and it proved to be a big hit in the Viennese capital.

With Bollywood churning out movies by the hour, it won't be long before you get the opportunity of being up-close and personal.
