Fix retirement age for politicians: Somnath
In a bid to pull in the young blood into the political arena, Somnath Chatterjee says a retirement age should be fixed for politicians.

New Delhi: The septuagenarian Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Saturday said he is in favour of fixing a retirement age for politicians.

"My personal view is that there should be some age limit. I want more and more younger people to come (into politics)," Chatterjee said.

Asked whether there should retirement age for politicians like other professions, he jocularly remarked "probably, I would like to first extend this to myself. I spent 35 years in Parliament rightly or wrongly."

Chatterjee, however, disagreed with the suggestion that there should be a minimum educational qualification for legislators and MPs.

"People from rural areas and workers' representatives may not be educated in conventional sense but they may prove to be wonderful members of Parliament. It is the commitment to people's issues that should be the criterion," he said.

Chatterjee, who was here to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, called upon the youth to join politics and become partners in the affairs of the state.

"Politics should not be treated as a dirty game. Unfortunately, there is an impression that honest people do not join politics. This should be changed," the Speaker said.
