The 66th Independence Day celebration at the Vellore Corporation office witnessed a flutter as the national flag was hoisted upside down.
Mayor P Karthiyayini, after garlanding the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Ambedkar, Kamarajar and Anna in the city, arrived to hoist the national flag. Much to the surprise of all present, the flag was hoisted with the green stripe on top. However, the mayor and officials noticed it and brought down the flag. It was hoisted again after setting right the mistake.
Later, Karthiyayini clarified, “The upper knot that fixed the flag to the rope had become untied due to heavy wind and as a result, the top portion of the flag fell down, inverting the colours of the flag.” In her address, Karthiyayini said, “The Corporation would take up all schemes and plans by the government through ward councillors.” She promised that Vellore city would be made a green city by next Independence Day, by planting trees, in association with Forest Department, in Corporation lands.”
Deputy mayor Dharmalingam, engineers, officials, staff and ward members of the Corporation were present on the occasion.
