BHADRAVATI: The sunrise at Baballi village on Monday surprised everybody as a foggy cloud engulfed the canal flowing through the village. The sight attracted people from near and far, with children having their share of fun.“The water from the canal flows through sugarcane fields and agricultural land on the outskirts of Baballi. So, a study of the chemical contents in the water is urgent,” villagers said.Sources said septum used for manufacturing soap and sulphuric acid, which spilled from a tanker parked near the canal in Kabalikatte, had caused the foamy formation in the water.Tahsildar Abhijin, who visited the spot, said that he has reported the incident to the pollution control board and has asked the municipality to take action against the tanker and factory owner, who had reportedly dumped the waste at the factory in Kabalikatte.According to villagers, the misty cloud had begun to form from Sunday evening itself, and added that fish and crab were found dead in the canal water.“After flowing through the farms, the water flows into river Bhadra, thus endangering the environment. This needs to be taken care of immediately by the department concerned,” villagers said. The tahsildar has warned the villagers not to use the water for drinking for the next two days.
