New Delhi: Cricketers espousing social causes is not something unusual. Cricketers auctioning off their personal effects in aid of said causes is, perhaps, becoming even more common.
But a cricket-player using the Internet for conducting such an auction is akin to killing two birds with one stone, for not only does the auction attract bids from a larger demographic, it also gives more prominence to the humanitarian cause in question.
Swashbuckling cricket star Yuvraj Singh, who recently hit six sixes in as many balls at the Twenty20 tournament, is selling his old car on eBay India and has already received 82 bids, with the latest being at Rs 4.07 lakhs.
The proceeds from this auction would go in aid of Bharmour Development Agency, an NGO that is working towards development of agriculture and the local tribal people in Bharmour, Himachal Pradesh.
In 2001, the City cost over Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom); currently, a second-hand car made in the same year is available for prices as low as Rs 2 lakhs.
The Honda City, which Singh purchased in 2001, had received a bid as high as Rs 49 lakhs on October 22, which was later retracted with the bidder saying that the amount had been entered incorrectly.
Ebay India had fixed the starting price at Rs 10,000 but the first bid itself had been for Rs 25,000. The minimum difference between bids is Rs 2,000. Bidding began on October 16 and shall close by Thursday, October 25, at 7.45 PM.
In a statement released by eBay India, the auction site said that Yuvraj would personally autograph the green-gold car and hand the keys over to the winner, in Chandigarh. The car is reported to be in excellent working condition and has been personally driven by the cricket-player.
