New Delhi: Meher Bhargava’s body was cremated in Lucknow on Monday. She died after being in coma for nearly a month.

Reacting to the incident, Congress has said that Meher Bhargav's killers should be caught immediately and accuses Samajbadi Party government for not doing enough to catch hold of the culprits.

Meher’s mother-in-law Rani Leela Ram Kumar Bhargav is in grief over the loss of her daughter-in-law. But what she and several other family members and friends are feeling is anger.

Meher, the wife of Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Luv Bhargava, was shot on February 28 in Lucknow after she confronted some youths who were harassing her daughter-in-law.

She was coming out of a building in the heart of Lucknow when four men passed lewd remarks at her daughter-in-law. When Meher, a lawyer herself, confronted them, demanding an apology, one of them shot her in the neck.

The police say that they have detained K D Singh, a criminal turned politician in Jaunpur for questioning. They say Singh is closely connected with the killers.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav was one of the visitors. Expressing his condolences, he said the killers would soon be arrested.

Friends and family members of Meher Bhargav are holding a candlelight protest march in Lucknow on Monday.

Outraged at the cold-blooded murder, family and friends of Meher have demanded strict action against the accused.
