France in crisis mode as riots spread
Paris has witnessed violence triggered by the death of two teenagers.

Clichy-Sous-Bois (France): France's government has gone into crisis mode to deal with spreading rioting in Paris' suburbs, with the prime minister and interior minister canceling overseas trips and the president calling for calm.

Banks, shopping centres and schools bore the brunt of the rioters' anger.

In northeastern suburbs around Clichy-sous-Bois, where the accidental deaths of two teenagers last week first prompted angry youths to rampage and young men embarked on a seventh consecutive night of fighting.

About a dozen cars burned in the Le Blanc-Mesnil suburb. Nearly 200 vehicles have been torched since the violence began, police said.

Hundreds of policemen were deployed to control the situation, firing rubber bullets and tear gas at gangs of rioting youths.

The violence has exposed the anger in suburbs, which has spread to nine Paris-region towns.

Late on Wednesday night, young people threw rocks at police in six suburbs in the Seine-Saint-Denis region north of Paris that includes Clichy, police said.

President Jacques Chirac told the Cabinet that the law must be applied firmly but in a spirit of dialogue and respect.
