Two persons, including a lawyer, were killed and another person suffered sever cut injuries after a gang of four attacked them with sharp weapons late on Sunday night. The two groups fought over water for their fields for irrigation.
Police said there was prolonged enmity between S Ravichandran (30), an advocate of Gowndanpatti near Kulithalai, and S Kannan and his brother Manivannan of Melakadu over water. Recently, Kannan and Manivannan diverted the flow of irrigation water to their land. Ravichandran, later, blocked the flow of water to their land and diverted the flow back towards his land.
Late on Sunday, when Ravichandran was chatting with his friend S Suresh (23) at Gowndanpatti Bazaar, the brothers, along with two others identified as M Ayyar and his brother M Mahesh, came and picked up a quarrel.
Following a heated exchange, they came to blows. Kannan’s group used lethal weapons and assaulted Ravichandran. When Suresh tried to save Ravichandran, he sustained severe cut injuries. On information, Ravichandran’s brother Marimuthu (38) rushed to the spot but they escaped in two motorcycles after assaulting him with a wooden log.
The injured were rushed to a hospital in Tiruchy but Ravichandran and Suresh succumbed to their injuries. Marimuthu is undergoing treatment. Kulithalai police registered a case and were searching for the culprits.
Condemning the murder, Tiruchy Bar Association members staged a silent march from the court complex to the GH and paid homage to the body.
