Nitin Gadkari inaugurates BJP national meet; vows to take forward the anti-UPA agitation

Standing at crossroads, with the party employing its full might in reclaiming the prime Opposition space in the country, the BJP began its national executive meet at Surajkund in Haryana on Wednesday.

It has decided to take forward the anti-UPA agitation, which it has been carrying on for the past few months, “with full vigour”.

Calling the Congress-led UPA government a “sinking ship”, where allies are bent on going separate ways, BJP president Nitin Gadkari gave a clarion call to his partymen to “be prepared for elections” as the incumbent government “was on the verge of disintegration”.

In his inaugural address, attended by some 300 delegates, Gadkari harped on the themes of corruption and bad governance, which, he argued, were the “signature tune of the UPA government, and had brought governance to a standstill”.

“It’s a classic case of bad governance. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who claims to be an arthshastri (economist) has actually proved to be an anarthshastri (‘someone who has performed disastrously and has brought the country to the brink of disaster’). The Congress in its last eight and-a-half years of rule has institutionalised corruption and brought institutions like PAC, JPC and CAG to disrepute,” he said. Seeking to recapture the good governance plank, the BJP president showcased NDA-ruled states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar “that had consistently witnessed growth rates higher than the national average” and contrasted it with the sense of gloom and despondency at the Centre.

Gadkari held forth on the coalgate issue and took forward the argument initially made by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj.

“Will the Congress give an account on how much money went into its coffers from the coal deals?” asked the party president.

Referring to the observations made by Congress president Sonia Gandhi at the recent CWC meeting, blaming the BJP for many of the ills inflicting the polity, Gadkari said, “It was surprising that the Sonia-Singh duo were apportioning the blame on BJP when the blame for running a corrupt government lay squarely with the Congress.”
