London: Gujaratis, who constitute nearly half of the Indian Diaspora in the UK, on Friday called on the new Indian government to launch direct flight routes between Britain and Ahmedabad.

The National Congress for Overseas Gujaratis in the UK made the representation at the ongoing Regional Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in London.

"Direct flights are a must for business to expand," said the group's secretary-general Mahendra Jadeja.

"Given that Gujaratis make up 46 per cent of the Indian Diaspora in Britain, this demand is valid and long-standing," he added.

He added that he had put across his requests to the former Civil Aviation ministry and hopes the new government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi would consider the demand positively.
