Haryana achieves 97 pc target to provide free water
A sum of Rs 465 crore has been spent on the implementation of the scheme upto March, 2013.

Chandigarh: The Haryana Government has achieved 97 per cent of the target of providing free water connections to households of members belonging to Scheduled Castes in the state. Stating this in Chandigarh on Sunday, a spokesman of Haryana Public Health and Engineering Department said that under the Indira Gandhi Drinking Water Scheme, out of the targeted more than 10.35 lakh such households, the water connections have already been given to 10.05 lakh households.

A sum of Rs 465 crore has been spent on the implementation of the scheme upto March, 2013. The scheme was launched on November 19, 2006, he said. The spokesman said that a scheme has also been implemented under special economic package to augment supply of drinking water and improve sewerage system in 14 towns of Haryana.

He said that under this ambitious scheme, the existing sewerage system would also be renovated. A sum of Rs 841.02 crore has already been spent upto March, 2013 under this scheme, he added.
