Panaji: Bombay High Court on Wednesday admitted a case against megastar Amitabh Bachchan and others for violating anti-tobacco laws in Goa.
The Goa bench of the High Court observed that there was a prima facie case against Bachchan and others, for violation of the Tobacco Control Law, in a criminal complaint filed by an non-government organization (NGO).
The National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE)-India, a Goa-based anti-tobacco NGO, had filed a criminal case against Bachchan and others after a huge poster showing the megastar with a cigar in his mouth was displayed on the state's highway.
The poster was from Hindi movie Family and was put up by Anchor, an electric appliances company.
NOTE had initially filed a case in the court of judicial magistrate first class at Panaji, who had issued notices against all the accused.
All accused, except Anchor, had challenged the issuance of the notices before the sessions court. The sessions court allowed the challenge and quashed the order against all except Anchor.
This order of the sessions court was challenged by NOTE before the High Court by way of criminal revision.
The High Court on Wednesday found prima facie case against Bachchan and has admitted the same for revision.
