Chandigarh: Agitating advocates of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday decided to end their ongoing strike and resume work from Monday after a division bench took cognisance of the registration of a case against 20 lawyers for allegedly beating up a policeman recently.

Lawyers had clashed with police on Wednesday demanding quashing of the FIR against advocate Rupinder Khosla and 19 others for allegedly beating the policeman at the high court. Khosla and other lawyers are accused of beating up a head constable after he had asked Khosla to show his identity card before allowing him entry into the court complex.

The lawyers had struck work on Wednesday and were marching to the Raj Bhawan to submit a memorandum demanding withdrawal of the FIR, when a clash took place after the cops stopped them. Taking cognisance of the incident, the division bench stayed further investigations in the FIR registered against the lawyers and putting the top brass of Chandigarh police and the administration, on notice.

The decision to resume work, however, came with a rider that the General House of the High Court Bar Association will meet again meet on Monday to review the situation.
