Heatwave Intensity Reduces In Eastern, Southern India; Orange Alert Issued For Rainfall In Northeast | Weather Updates

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted relief from the scorching conditions in several Indian states from May 5 to May 9. Additionally, an orange warning has been issued, forecasting substantial rainfall in Northeast India on May 5 and 6.

As per the weather department, many Indian states saw maximum temperatures ranging from 42-45°C on Saturday.

In particular, maximum temperatures were recorded at 45.9 degrees Celsius in Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), 45 degrees in Mahbubnagar (Telangana), 44 degrees in Odisha’s Boudh, 43.5 degrees in Karur Paramathi (Tamil Nadu), 44.6 degrees in Nizamabad (Telangana), 45.4 in Andhra Pradesh’s Cuddapah, and 43.5 degrees in West Bengal’s Kalaikunda.

The current heatwave spell in eastern and southern peninsular India is expected to persist until May 5-6, IMD said. Relief is anticipated thereafter, as light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are predicted in Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand from May 5 to 9.

However, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions were noted in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Telangana, with maximum temperatures settling 3-5 degrees Celsius above normal in these areas.

Rainfall predictions

In the Northeast, a heavy to very heavy rainfall spell, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, is highly likely over Northeast India on May 5 and 6.

Arunachal Pradesh is expected to experience intense rainfall on May 5, with similar weather conditions anticipated in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during the same period. While heavy showers has been forecasted in Meghalaya and Assam on May 5 and 6.

The are predictions of light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand from May 5 to 9.

Additionally, scattered light to moderate rainfall is expected in east Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh during this period.

High temperature & humidity in Kerala

The weather department has also issued a yellow alert for 12 out of the 14 districts in Kerala due to the likelihood of high temperature and humidity until May 6.

As per the IMD, maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 39 degrees Celsius in Palakkad, approximately 38 degrees Celsius in Kollam, Thrissur, and Kozhikode, about 37 degrees Celsius in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, and Kannur districts, and around 36 degrees Celsius in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kasaragod districts.
