New Delhi: The Kolkata Police has decided to deploy officers from the Special Branch to oversee John Buchanan's security.
The move comes in the wake of widespread protests in Kolkata following Buchanan's decision to field more than one captain for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Fans are angry that Sourav Ganguly who has so far led the team, will now have to share the captaincy with others.
On Thursday, Ganguly's supporters burnt John Buchanan's effigy of and threatened to boycott Shah Rukh Khan movies.
Buchanan had announced on Wednesday that he would be trying out four different captains in this edition of the Indian Premier League, putting Ganguly's position in the lurch.
While the Knight Riders were going through their paces on Thursday afternoon in the final conditioning camp at Eden Gardens in Buchanan's absence, a group of youngsters took to the streets protesting against the multiple captain theory and shouting slogans of 'Go back Buchanan'.
The group of protesters, holding banners, also appealed to Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan to make Ganguly the team's sole leader.
They said if Shah Rukh Khan did not bring a change to the coach's decision, they would stop screening of the actor's movies in Behala, where Ganguly lives.
Buchanan, known for his punctuality, strangely did not turn up at Eden till 2.30pm despite the fact that the camp had started shortly after 1.
Ganguly, though, went through the rigours of the camp with Knight Riders teammates Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Sourav Sarkar, Arindam Ghosh and the team support staff.
The two-time Australian World Cup winning coach finally arrived around 3 pm and the camp went on till evening.
There were several agitations in the city when the Prince of Kolkata was removed as skipper of Team India at the insistence of coach Greg Chappel in 2005.
