CHENNAI: Describing the hike in prices of milk, bus fare and power tariff as painful, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday said the decision was only to redeem the almost bankrupt State-owned enterprises.She said it was the only way out to enable the transport and power corporations besides the Aavin to continue to serve the people. Blaming the previous DMK regime for the huge losses suffered by State-owned firms, she said Karunanidhi’s statement was akin to devil quoting the scriptures. The CM dismissed Karunanidhi’s statement— that despite the plea for a hike, he had preferred borrowing to protect the people’s interests— as a bag of lies. “If the (DMK) government had bailed out State firms through borrowings, how come they are entangled in debt? she asked. Without naming her erstwhile allies the DMDK and the Left, she said such parties had expressed concern over the financial situation of the DMK regime besides administrative irregularities before the polls. “They said that only I could address these issues through bold measures. Now, they are condemning these measures, I leave it to their conscience to decide if they are right,” she said.
