New Delhi: Addressing the nation on 69th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said a large number of steps -- from the appointment of a special team to enforcing a strict law to prevent such cases of black money and punish its perpetrators have been taken by his government to tackle black money.
Modi, on Saturday said the Central Bureau of Investigation was probing around 800 cases of black money in 2014 when he took over. Now 1,800 cases were being examined.
"Many people did not like this," he said referring to the dislike of people. He also said this had to be done and already several thousand crores of rupees have been collected from people who have begun to declare their ill-gotten assets.
Recalling the day after he took over the country's reins, he said a Special Investigation Team, as directed by the Supreme Court, was set up to investigate cases of black money and get back wealth that had been stashed away abroad.
"Even at the G20 meeting, I raised the issue and we have been promised cooperation. And within one year, a stringent legislation to deal with this issue was also enacted", he said.
