In the coastal areas of India, crops like peanuts, rubber, paddy, and coconut often dominate the majority of land. With time, dragon fruit cultivation has also made its place in the croplands of farmers in India, especially in Mysuru, Karnataka. Recently, a piece of news is currently garnering attention that a farmer in Musuru is earning more from dragon fruit cultivation.
According to reports, on a two-acre farm near Badanavalu Village in Nanjangud taluk of Mysore district, farmer Raju is getting more income from the crop by using organic fertilisers instead of chemical ones.
The farmer of Badanavalu village has planted dragon fruit on two acres of land. He is earning a high income in dragon fruit by using organic fertiliser without using any kind of chemical fertiliser for this crop.
Apart from this, Raju brought three Gir cows from Gujarat two years ago and started rearing them. They collect its garbage and dung and put it in the land where he cultivates dragon fruit.
In a recent interview, Raju shared that 3 lakhs have been spent on two acres to grow dragon fruit, and now the fruits are yielding 8 tonnes per acre. They do not market the fruits. Instead of Mysore and Chamarajanagar main roads, a small shop has opened next to the farm, and there he sells dragon fruit for Rs 150 per kg. He is earning Rs 18-20 lakhs per year from this fruit.
He also added that he also earns Rs 30,000 per month from the milk of Gir cows. Raju is a model farmer earning a high income from his two acres of land.
Earlier, a farmer of Belthangady in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka came into the limelight for harvesting dragon fruit plants on his four acres of land. The farmer named Antony saw the rising opportunity of dragon fruit cultivation. So, he decided to cut down his four acres of rubber plantation to plant dragon fruit.
The plantation has reportedly started yielding results in one year. Around Rs 40 lakh has been spent on levelling the four acres of land, planting trees, electric wire fencing around the garden, drip irrigation, and other works. Antony got about 30 tonnes of dragon fruit in the first harvest.
