Hyderabad: Hyderabad police have arrested eight people who duped a man off Rs 58 lakh in new currency notes.
They were caught after the victim, Divesh Agarwal of Malakpet area of the city, approached the police.
The prime accused, Arun, hatched a conspiracy to rob Agarwal after he found out that he had a lot of money in new currency notes. He along with his accomplices approached Agarwal, offering a commission of 25% for converting demonetised currency that they allegedly had on them.
The offer attracted Agarwal and he agreed to be part of the deal. On the intervening night of 4th December, he brought Rs 58 lakh in Rs
2000 and Rs 100 denominations. The accused snatched the money and fled from the spot.
DCP south zone V Satyanaraya told CNN news 18: "There are over 50 such mediators roaming in old city area. People should be aware of such criminals. IT department will further probe into the matter. Of the seized amount, Rs 38 lakhs is in new 2000-rupee-notes. Complainant, who runs a business says, his workers got him the new notes after standing in the queues. We will take strict action against all such mediators."
Acting on the complaint, police filed a case and arrested the accused from a hotel where they were planning the future course of action.
They have also asked the IT department to help them investigate the case.
