New Delhi: Aamir Khan and Deepika Padukone topped an IBNLive cinema poll to be crowned the Best Actor and Actress of last year, clearly indicating that the veteran actors continue to be Bollywood trusted, main draw despite a host of talented new stars redefining cinema each day.
In response to an IBNLive poll we conducted earlier this year, we asked our audience to vote for Indian cinema's top performers in several categories.
Malayalam superstar Prithviraj won the award for best supporting actor for his role in the film 'Aurangzeb'. His character in the film was not all white or all black, but an interesting shade of grey, where he played a Gurgaon cop who has to choose between the truth, and responsibilities that he has towards his family. It was a clear win for Prithviraj, who led the pole with over 51 per cent votes.
IBN Live Movie Award for Best Supporting Actress is won by Supriya Pathak for 'Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela'. From instantly being happy to chopping off her daughter's finger, to taking the prospective groom in custody, Pathak came across as one of the best performers in 'Ram Leela'. She got over 29 per cent votes.
Actor Varun Sharma won the award for best actor in a comic role for the film 'Fukrey'. Over 30 per cent audience voted for him.
Interestingly, the audience has voted Aamir Khan for the best actor, as well as the best actor in a negative role, for his film 'Dhoom 3'. Aamir played a negative role in 'Dhoom 3', a racy franchise that made biking cool in India.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', which got 39.72 per cent votes was adjudged the best film of the year 2013. Mehra brought ace athlete Milkha Singh's life on the big screen in a mega spectacle of patriotism and entertainment. Farhan Akhtar proved his critics wrong by portraying a difficult role with panache. The biopic also won a National Award this year.
It was a good year for Deepika and audiences awarded her overwhelmingly for her film 'Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela' with 67 per cent of the votes polled for her. The Best Supporting Actor votes went to Prithviraj for 'Aurangzeb'. The Best Supporting Actress is Supriya Pathak for 'Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela'.
It's not often that the director of a Best Film also wins Best Director. But readers voted Mehra, the director of 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', as the Best Director with 37 per cent of the votes polled. The Hindi film industry was never known for organised filmmaking, but over the years the scenario has changed a lot. Now, the industry has tilted more in favour of people who have big pockets. The process of filmmaking has become less important than its publicity drive and big studios are emerging as the champions of this art. However, every now and then we come across films which showcase fantastic content and get benefited by the word-of-mouth publicity.
In a completely new category rarely recognised at mainstream film awards, our Best Independent Film category got great response from our readers. They who voted 'Maazii' as the Best Independent Film of last year. All categories will be announced over the next two days. Watch this space.
