P Palanichamy, owner of PRP Exports, one of the companies accused of illegal granite quarrying, who surrendered before the Madurai Superintendent of Police (SP) V Balakrishnan at the district police office here on Saturday, was taken to an undisclosed destination, after completing formalities, for further investigation. Palanichamy arrived at the district police office at 12.50 pm along with a big contingent of lawyers, led by Madras High Court lawyer Paul Kanagaraj. He was told to wait at the conference hall of the building for some time. After completing legal procedures, Balakrishnan directed the investigation officer of the special team, formed to probe the 18,000 crore illegal quarrying scam, to arrest Palanichamy. The team arrested him in the presence of Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Mayilvahanan.
Palanichamy submitted an explanatory letter on the cases against him. Police officials quizzed Palanichamy in the presence of his lawyers Paul Kanagaraj, Peter Rameshkumar, Sankara Narayanan and Anbuselvan. ater, he was taken to an undisclosed destination for further interrogation.
Balakrishnan said that Palanichamy would be produced before the Melur magistrate on Sunday. Talking to reporters, the SP said “Palanichamy surrendered before the ADSP (crime) Mayilvahanan at 1 pm and is now under the custody of the special police team.” The Supreme Court guidelines on the investigation would be followed during the interrogation, he said.
“Palanichamy alone surrendered today. None of his family members named in the FIR surrendered,” the SP said. “We have filed 13 cases with regard to illegal granite quarrying. Palanichamy is named in three cases. As of now, we have arrested 30 persons, in these cases,” he explained.
