THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is no way one would miss the luminous and resplendent light falling on the road while passing through the Karamana junction during night hours. It is the effect of  hi max light (which is a cluster of  lights illuminated like the floodlight in a cricket stadium) that was put up in the intersection at Karamana, the first in the city. The good news is that as many as 10 more intersections in the city would soon have similar hi max lights installed which would leave the whole place lighted up as on a new moon day. The idea has been proposed by the Town Planning Committee of the City Corporation by including it in its annual Plan for 2011-12. Sasthamangalam will be the next place where the intersection will be lighted up with the hi max light. ‘’In two days time, the work will begin, the lights have been kept ready,’’ said Sureshkumar (Gopan), councillor of Sasthamangalam. According to Town Planning Standing Committee Chairperson Vanaja Rajendrababu, the Corporation plans to put up hi max lights due to several reasons. One is naturally, the flooding light on the road will be a boon to shopkeepers or people who stand at intersections to catch buses or vehicles to get home. Secondly, it will  keep off anti-social elements who normally use darkness as a cover for illegal acts. It is cost effective too. And also part of the beautification of the city, said Vanaja.Former Town Planning member Palayam Rajan says that there are such hi max lights (though not to the effect of the one at Karamana) put up at Shangumugham and Palayam by the Road Fund Board. ‘‘After a specific time period, the maintenance of these lights will be upon the Corporation,’’ Rajan said. "We are identifying the junctions to be included in the project. Due to financial constraints, we might have to go slow by first introducing the lights in a couple of junctions and then proceeding to other parts of the city,’’ said Vanaja.
