Muzaffarnagar: A court in Muzaffarnagar on Thursday found Ali Mohammad guilty of raping his daughter-in-law Imrana.
In a packed courtroom, District and Sessions Judge R D Nimesh held Mohammed guilty for raping Imrana, a resident of Charthawal village in Uttar Pradesh.
The court sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment and asked him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000, of which Rs 5,000 would be given to Imrana.
As news of the case came out, there were shocking consequences as the local clergy declared her marriage illegal saying that if she had relations with the father she could be a mother to the son.
Twenty-eight year-old Imrana was raped by her father-in-law more than a year and a half ago while her husband was away at work. Imrana informed her mother in law who told Imrana to keep the incident a secret.
But just over a week later on June 11, word got out and Imrana's brothers beat up her father in law.
On June 13, a local panchayat asked Imrana, the mother of five children, to treat her husband Nur Ilahi as her son and declared their marriage null and void. She was sent back to her parents the same day.
On June 20, women's groups organised a medical examination of Imrana and recorded her statement in which she accused her father-in-law of rape. After which her father-in-law was promptly arrested.
In a setback to Imrana, on June 24, leading Islamic seminary Darul-uloom Deoband issued a fatwah saying that she could no longer live with her husband. But the seminary later denied it had issued any such fatwa.
