The locals residing in the Periyakulam in Theni district, Tamil Nadu, are turning a medicinal herb plant into good money. Interestingly, this plant possesses extremely beneficial properties, which could prove to be very advantageous to the body.
As per a report by News18, the plant is known as the oomathai plant and it has several other names like Oomattan, Unmattam, Vellamatta, Kattu Oomathai and more. According to reports, this plant is naturally found on the foothills, or the roadside barren lands.
The oomathai plant is poisonous but can be used for several health-related issues. As per reports, these plants are obtained by country medicine shop owners from the district of Theni. They then sell it at wholesale prices as medicinal herbs. The locals of the district also collect more plants like the gokshura, keezhanelli and neem and sell them to the medicine shop owners.
Currently, the residents dry the oomathai plant seeds on the roadside of the route of Andipatti to Lower Camp in Theni. They pluck the plant from the road, break it with stones to get the seeds, and then dry it on the roadside for over two hours. It is then sold to the medicine shopkeepers for Rs 50 per kg.
The oomathai plant can be used for health issues related to the mind. It can be beneficial for the condition of paranoia, rheumatic diseases, strengthening the nerves, insomnia and lice. Furthermore, it can be effective for the condition of bronchial tuberculosis.
This plant consists of a chemical called hyoscyamine, which can be found in its seeds and leaves. This chemical provides relief from the conditions related to the gut. It is called the Siva Sekharam in the ancient medicinal writings and is associated with Lord Shiva worship.
