In Virajpet Coffee Plantation, Wild Elephant Dies After Falling Into Well
A wild elephant possibly looking for food or water wandered into a private property, fell into a well and died.

In a tragic incident, an elephant was wandering in search of food or water and fell into a well in front of a house and died. The well was dug under the employment guarantee scheme in front of a house on a coffee plantation in Virajpet, Karnataka. The well did not have rings on it so when the wild elephant came looking for food or water, it fell into the well as it was not visible in the dark. The forest department officials arrived at the scene and helped in lifting the elephant out of the well.

Previously, in April, in Kerala, a male wild elephant fell into a well of private property during the wee hours and died before it could be rescued. As per a forest official, the jumbo got trapped in the well and this information was received at 2 am. A team of veterinary doctors immediately rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, the forest official team began the rescue operations using an earth excavator to create a path for it to come out. Unfortunately, before the rescue operations could conclude, the tusker breathed its last in the morning. The forest officials took out the carcass from the well and sent it for examination to pinpoint the exact cause of death.

The well is a private property, just 200 metres away from the forest. The officials shared that such incidents were quite rare in Thrissur and were heart-breaking. Apart from this, several other incidents of wild elephants falling into wells in Kerala and the jumbos were rescued.

Meanwhile, people are waiting for the Harangi reservoir located near Hudgur village, Kushalnagar Taluk in Kodagu district, Karnataka to fill up. Rain has begun in several parts of the state and will soon fill up the reservoir. People are also fearful of the fact that if the Harangi dam fills up it can cause flooding in the backwaters and along the river banks. The plan to remove silt from the backwaters has still not been implemented.

It is assumed that once the reservoir fills up, animals can easily quench their thirst by drinking from there.
