According to health ministry data, India has recorded 6,088 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, with 148 deaths reported in the same period.

The number of coronavirus cases in India showed the biggest daily increase on Friday, crossing the 6,000 mark for the first time.

There are 66,330 active COVID-19 cases in the country. The number of people who have recovered after contracting the virus has risen to 48,534 and the recovery rate – the percentage of people to have recovered – stood at 40.97 per cent, an increase from 40.31 per cent on Thursday.

Out of the total 148 deaths reported since Thursday morning, Maharashtra confirmed 64 deaths — one of the highest in single-day tolls in the state since the outbreak.

Twenty-four deaths were reported from in Gujarat, 18 from Delhi, 11 from Uttar Pradesh, seven from Tamil Nadu, six from West Bengal, five from Telangana, four from Rajasthan, three from Madhya Pradesh, two from Jammu and Kashmir and one each from Bihar, Odisha, Haryana and Punjab.

The death toll surged to 45 in Telangana, 41 in Karnataka and 39 in Punjab.

In Jammu and Kashmir, 20 Covid-19 fatalities were reported. Haryana has 15 fatalities while Bihar has registered 11 and Odisha seven deaths. Kerala and Assam have recorded four deaths each.

Jharkhand, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh each have seen three new fatalities because of the disease, while Meghalaya and Uttarakhand have reported one fatality each, according to the ministry data.

Over 70 per cent of the deaths are due to comorbidities, the ministry said.

The maximum number of confirmed cases in India are from Maharashtra at 41,642, followed by Tamil Nadu at 13,967, Gujarat at 12,905, Delhi at 11,659 Rajasthan at 6,227, Madhya Pradesh at 5,981 and Uttar Pradesh at 5,515, news agency PTI reported citing health ministry data.

The number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 3,197 in West Bengal, 2,647 in Andhra Pradesh and 2,028 in Punjab. Infections have climbed to 1,982 in Bihar, 1,699 in Telangana, 1,605 in Karnataka,1,449 in Jammu and Kashmir and 1,10 in Odisha.

Haryana, meanwhile, has reported 1,031 COVID-19 cases so far while Kerala has 690 cases. In Jharkhand, 290 people have tested positive for the disease while in Chandigarh 217 persons have been infected with the novel coronavirus.

"1,620 cases are being reassigned to states," the ministry said on its website, adding, "Our figures are being reconciled with the ICMR."

Assam has reported 203 cases, Tripura has 173, Himachal Pradesh has 152, Uttarakhand has 146, Chhattisgarh has 128, and Goa has recorded 52 cases so far.

Ladakh has registered 44 COVID-19 cases. Andaman and Nicobar Islands has recorded 33 coronavirus cases. Manipur has 25 Covid-19 cases, Puducherry has 20 cases and Meghalaya has 14 cases.

Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Dadar and Nagar Haveli have registered a case each so far.
