India-UK ties got a new impetus as Prime minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart David Cameron laid the roadmap for a new course. The two leaders on Thursday announced deals worth 9 billion pounds as they signed a landmark civil nuclear agreement.

On the economic side the UK Prime Minister committed that companies from his country will support Modi's 'Make in India' initiative. Modi reciprocated by promising to set up a fast track mechanism for UK investments in India.

The media interaction was no holds barred, with both PMs answering some tough questions. Modi replied to the first question on alleged intolerance head on, saying his government is committed to freedom of speech.

Modi replied that India is the land of Buddha and Gandhi, and its culture does not accept anything that is against the basic social values.

"India does not accept intolerance even if it is one or two or three incidents. But for a country of 125 crore people whether it is significant or not, it does not matter. For us every incident is serious. We do not tolerate it," Modi said.

"Law takes strong action and will continue to do so. India is a vibrant democracy which under Constitution provides protection all citizens, their lives and thoughts. We are committed to it," the Prime Minister added.

At the media interaction, a reporter asked a question on UK denying permission to Modi to visit the country in the past because during his tenure as the Gujarat chief minister.

Replying to this, Cameron said, "I am pleased to welcome PM Modi, he comes with an enormous mandate given by people of India. In the past there were legal proceedings, but now we are committed to work towards a bright future."

In the joint press conference, Cameron described the relations between the two sides as a "new dynamic modern partnership" and reiterated his country's support for India's permanent membership of the UN Security Council.

Modi later highlighted plans for India to use London as a financial base for fundraising.

"We are going to use the London market for fundraising even more and I am happy to announced that we are set to launch a railway rupee bond in London. It is appropriate as the journey of Indian Railways started in the UK," Modi said.

Modi, who flew into the British capital on his much- anticipated three-day visit, was accorded a guard of honour by the 48-member F Company Scots Guard accompanied by the regimental band of Irish Guards.
