Bhopal: Prison reforms in India have moved by leaps and bounds and Madhya Pradesh government taking these reforms a step ahead. The state government has decided to provide insurance cover to 14,000 inmates serving life sentences.
The government has begun talks with the Life Insurance Corpoartion to provide insurance for the inmates. The premium for the insurance cover will be paid from the daily earnings of the prisoners.
Ajit Dubey, who is serving life imprisonment in a murder case, was the sole breadwinner of his family. With the government's decision to provide insurance cover to inmates, now brings in some ray of hope for prisoners like him.
“The government's decision is welcome for if something happens to me my family members will get something to fall back upon," said Dubey.
“The government had taken the decision keeping in mind the fact that dependents of those serving life sentences are the worst affected and death of such prisoners usually means the end of the road for them, “said Antar Singh Arya.
The government's decision is in the right spirit but the inmates hope that benefits to the families are not delayed.
