New Delhi: It seems that June 22 is the perfect date for 'Gangs of Wasseypur' to go public. The film has been receiving rave reviews in India and abroad, and thus the common audience is waiting for the film with eager hearts. The director Anurag Kashyap will be under tremendous pressure to strike a chord with the audience, however, the film's good performance at various film festivals would provide him hope for a good show at the ticket window.
The film premiered at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival in front of the packed house. Magazines such as Hollywood Reporter compared it with Quentin Tarantino's films. It wrote, "Gangs of Wasseypur puts Tarantino in a corner with its cool command of cinematically-inspired and referenced violence, ironic characters and breathless pace."
Screen International echoed the same sentiments, "There's never a dull moment in this Indian gangland epic."
Reactions from the normal audiences were also on the same lines.
Now, the film has been screened at the Sydney Film Festival and apparently it has created a lot of enthusiasm about the Indian cinema. Going by the trends on social networking sites, both parts of 'Gangs of Wasseypur' are hugely successful among the foreign viewers. The film will be released in two parts, each of 2 hour 40 minutes duration. The second part will be projected in cinema halls after two-three weeks of the first part.
Screenwriter Shridhar Raghavan, who has been associated with films such as 'Khakee' and 'Dum Maaro Dum', has also praised the film on the micro blogging site Twitter, "I did not like, I loved it. Congrats and awaiting the second part eagerly. Totally blown by 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. Epic, violent, poetic, visceral, dramatic & yet dark humour filled revenge saga spanning half a century."
Actor Ranvir Shorey also has praises for the film, "#GoW is an introduction to the Hindi heartland in all its blood, guts & glory, told with characteristic."
The tweets also suggest that the foreign audiences don't have any problem with the length of the film. Generally, they are not adapted to viewing a complete film of almost 5 hour 20 minutes.
'Gangs of Wasseypur' is probably the only Hindi film of recent times which is getting so much attention in the west. Though many Hindi films have done well at the box office in the overseas market, but none of them got any critical acclaim. Such kind of overwhelming response will certainly make the western world more interested in Indian cinema.
