New Delhi: The initial box office collection of 'Mere Brother ki Dulhan' says that the film is all set to become a hit. 'Yash Raj Films' was going through a 'not so good' phase before 'Badmaash Company'.
It had several back to back flops in the names of 'Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year', 'Roadside Romeo', 'Pyaar Impossible', 'Lafangey Parindey', 'Tashan' and 'Dil Bole Hadippa'.
However, the scenario has changed with 'Badmaash Company', 'Band Baaja Baaraat' and now 'Mere Brother ki Dulhan'.
Anushka Sharma in first two and Katrina Kaif in the latest have proven lucky for Yash Raj Films.
As far as the industry experience is concerned, Anushka Sharma is still nascent; however, Katrina has spent around eight years.
Katrina has delivered hit after hit. It's a different matter that her acting never became prime focus area, still heroes and producers insisted on her name as the lead lady.
Katrina did not prove their faith wrong either. Barring her cameo roles in 'Hello', 'Blue' and 'Bodyguard', Katrina has produced 14 successful films out of a career span of 21 films.
If three cameo roles are to be deducted, then the success ratio comes to nearly 77.7 per cent, a fairly high percentage by any standard.
If all of her Hindi films are to be included then Katrina's success percentage will approach nearly 72 per cent.
Is this why the filmmakers bank upon Katrina Kaif as heroine?
It's true that Katrina has tried to emerge as a good actor in her recent films; still her screen doll image is intact.
Seven out of her first ten films were hits. Normally, the Hindi film industry starts to give successful actors a scope to experiment with their acting skills after so many hits. On the contrary, Katrina continued to do same sorts of roles as before. 'Namastey London' was the only exception.
Neither she, nor the producers showed the will to flaunt good acting skills.
Six out of next ten films became successful at the box office, but the scenario has not changed. Katrina has remained quintessentially an eye candy.
She might have donned a different character in 'MBKD' but Dimple Dixit's character is by no means an unusual or strange role for Katrina.
'Rajneeti' could be considered as a distinguished character, but that too had showcased Katrina as a glamour girl in major part of the film.
Even if we accept 'Rajneeti' as an acting oriented film for Katrina, still the list does not exceed two, 'Namastey London' is the other film on the register.
Invariably Katrina has been featured as one heroine in multi starrers. One can argue that doing multi starrer film is the need of the hour as makers want to cash on the collective fan base of several stars.
Of course, it's required but then one already established star has to be braver to evolve as a performer.
Katrina has not evolved despite being widely popular for since three years at least.
So, she is a good looking woman with a huge fan bank and big films in the kitty, and has superstars working opposite her.
She enjoys immense trust of producers due to her hit giving capacity.
Combine both the facts and we will get a Katrina Kaif, who has respectable success rate and big films, without coming up with extraordinary roles.
Does not this suggest that the producers are more interested in Katrina Kaif due to her hit giving potential, basically in her lucky charm?
Thus, it seems that Katrina Kaif is the most eagerly awaited lucky mascot at the box office, at least for the time being.
The success of 'MKBD' has only helped in establishing her mighty lady luck once more.
