It's real: Reality shows do wonders for TRPs
Reality TV eyeballs are growing and want more of the genre.

Mumbai: With entertainment channels introducing new reality TV shows, the viewership of Saas Bahu shows has gone down. So how much of a difference to reality shows make to channel TRPs? Are they now the easier formula to success?

Ever since Kaun Banega Crorepati sent TRPs soaring, the battle for reality eyeballs has been on. Today, channels say roping in actors like Shah Rukh Khan or a Salman Khan for a show is more for brand value than TRPs. So that leaves reality shows to make all the difference.

"Reality shows always help push TRPs," said Programming Head, Sony TV, Gurdip Bhangoo.

While the reality shows got uglier to draw in audiences, adding celebrities to the genre is also working. The successful launch of Colors last year relied heavily on Akshay Kumar's Khatron Ke Khiladi and the celeb reality show Bigg Boss 2.

The channel got the two biggest stars and that made a difference," said Programming Head, Colors, Ashwini Yardi.

Zee TV's Dance India Dance managed to make the channel a top player beating even Twenty20 cricket.

"Reality shows helps bring in new viewers," said COO, Zee TV, Nitin Vaidya.

But in the clutter of reality shows, standing out is a tall task. So will something as invasive and sensational as Star's Sach Ka Saamna have many takers?

"No, I feel why should I answer to the whole of India. If someone needs to know about me, ask me personally. Why on national television?" questioned one viewer.

"I would really mind going there and answering such personal questions because certain things are personal to me and I would not like to disclose that to the public or on television," described another viewer.

"No, definitely not, I think my personal life is my business and I wouldn't want to share it with the public," said another viewer.

"I wouldn't want my personal life to be broadcasted on national television," shared another viewer.

With entertainment channels raring to go ahead with their new reality shows, the genre is here to stay and entertain.
