The Women’s Commission is planning to have Jagrithy Samithy in every district to resolve the issues pertaining to women. Domestic violence is increasing and empowerment of women is necessary at the grass-roots level and local self-governments can do a lot in this regard.
Despite the increasing education and empowerment of women, the majority of women are unable to lodge a complaint against the atrocities suffered, said Rosakutty teacher, Kerala Women’s Commission chairperson after inaugurating a three-day seminar on ‘Women in Developmental process: Role of Local Self-Government: Strategies and policies in the changing scenario’ organised at the St Teresa’s College auditorium on Monday. She said that awareness programmes should be conducted among the youth so that they in turn will be able to
create awareness about their rights among the marginalised.
She also said that `20,000 will be given for conducting DNA test to exploited women living Below Poverty Line. Plans are also afoot for rehabilitation programmes for economically backward women and children.
She requested the younger generation to be the voice of the voiceless and engage in active intervention to protect women from the social evils of alcoholism, sexual exploitation and domestic violence.
