Jaipur: Award-winning writer Eimear McBride's first novel 'A Girl is a Half-formed Thing' contains no names. A look inside the dark mind of a young girl, the book only took McBride six months to write.
But a book that took only six months to write, took over nine years to get published. So how did the Irish writer manage?
"I got the feeling from many publishers that they were not brave enough to back my book," said McBride. She added that many publishers gave reasons for their rejection, others didn't feel the need to say anything.
But with the help of her family and their support, McBride held her own in the waiting game, and won a series of awards and acclaim for her debut novel.
McBride's 'A Girl is a Half-formed Thing' is a dark look inside a young girl's mind, with a prose that is supposed to sound just like the words inside a person's heads -- with no necessary cohesive nature, rather a mixture of feelings, impressions, thoughts and the sounds outside.
McBride was speaking at the Zee Jaipur Literature Festival on the topic 'Early Triumphs', along with writer Eleanor Catton in a session moderated by Razia Iqbal. The session was presented by UN Women.
