In full view of the morning rush hour commuters, a 25-year-old man stab-bed his lady love before stabbing himself at the Broadway bus stand on Tuesday. Both succumbed at a hospital later in the day.
Police said that Raja alias Rajarathinam, (27), a mechanic working in a service centre in Tondiarpet, came to Broadway bus stand pursuing Karthika, (21), a resident of Manickam Nagar, Thiruvottiyur, who went to Broadway to board a bus to Nandambakkam.
She had completed BSc (computer science) from a city college this year and was placed in an ITES company. She was working on a project and was bound for Nandambakkam when Raja intercepted her around 8.30 am.
Police said Raja wanted to talk about their relationship and insisted that the girl marries him, which she refused. Enraged, Raja took out a knife and slashed Kar-thika’s throat and stabbed her in the stomach.
Shocked bystanders fled from the spot while Raja used the same knife to stab himself in his stomach and both of them collapsed in a pool of blood.
Law College students who were in the bus stand passed on the information to the police. Assistant Commissioner of High Court range, K N Murali, and Esplanade Inspector Chellappa rushed the duo to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital where Karthika reportedly succumbed to injuries. Raja was hospitalised and a surgery was performed, but he too succumbed to the self-inflicted injury around 12.30 pm.
Raja was a tenant occupying the first floor portion of Karthika’s house in Vimco Nagar in Thiruvottiyur and the duo was in love for the past three years.
Senthamil Selvan and Agnes, parents of Karthika, came to know of their only child’s relationship and were thinking of getting them married.
Meanwhile, Karthika reportedly told her parents that she noticed changes in Raja’s conduct. The family subsequently convinced her to drop him due to his way-ward ways.
Karthika began avoiding Raja who had reportedly threatened to take her life if she did not marry him.
