New Delhi: We’ve all some of the most incredulous tales of celebrity worship and of star-struck fans going all-out to prove their affinity for their favourite actor.
But an artist in North Carolina has surpassed many a celeb devout by depicting Hollywood beauty Angelina Jolie as Virgin Mary, and then putting the painting on sale for $50,000.
The painting, a creation of artist Kate Kretz, is hovering over a Wal-Mart check-out line and has generated a huge buzz on the Internet.
Kate Kretz has painted for 20 years but none of her previous works ever garnered as much attention as this controversial artwork has. The painting, titled "Blessed Art Thou," is currently showing at Art Miami 2007 that began on Friday.
The painting - acrylic and oil on linen - depicts an angelic Jolie in the clouds, holding her newborn daughter Shiloh with children Maddox and Zahara at her legs as cherubs.
Below them is a checkout line at Wal-Mart, where women wait in line.
However, Kretz maintains on her blog that the painting's purpose is to mock Hollywood's obsession with celebrities.
On her blog, she says she chose Jolie for the subject "because of her unavoidable presence in the media, the worldwide anticipation of her child, her 'unattainable' beauty and the good that she is doing in the world through her example, which adds another layer to the already complicated questions surrounding her status." "My intention was to ask a question and get people to think," Kretz is quoted as saying by Associated Press. "I had no idea so many people would be asking a question and thinking."
