Kabini water finally reaches Mettur
In a symbolic gesture, farmers and PWD officials offer prayers after receiving the seasons first inflow

Finally, the water released from Karnataka’s Kabini dam reached the Stanley reservoir at Mettur at 11 am on Saturday.

In a symbolic gesture, farmers and PWD officials showered petals into the river Cauvery and offered prayers after receiving the season’s first inflow.

According to officials,  2,213 cusecs reached the Mettur dam at 11 am - nearly 17 hours after the anticipated time. Water discharged from the Kabini dam had to traverse 240 km downstream passing through dry and parched river bed, which led to the delay in reaching the reservoir here.

About 27,000 cusecs was discharged from the Kabini on Thursday and Friday. It was not known if further more quantum was discharged on Saturday as the PWD Department in Tamil Nadu could not establish contact with their Karnataka counterparts as it was a holiday in that State on Saturday.  However, according to information obtained through other sources, rains were continuing in the catchments in Karnataka, while Mettur dam’s catchments also received 12.8 mm rain on Saturday.  At 4 pm on Saturday, the level in the Mettur dam stood at 73.35 feet against its full storage capacity of 120 feet. The storage was 35.64 TMC against its full capacity of 93.5 TMC.   The inflow increased to 3,724 cusecs by evening while the discharge from the dam was maintained at 2000 cusecs.
