Kanpur: One has heard of men going on a rampage, mobs of men going berserk, breaking the law.
However, this was a ruckus with a twist. A report in ANI states that scores of Kanpur girls went on a rampage on Wednesday after state officials failed to disburse the educational funds promised by the state government.
According to the news agency, the angry girls smashed the windowpanes of the office of a local functionary of the educational department and blocked the traffic to protest delay in reimbursement of the scheme.
"We are protesting because we are tired of coming here everyday. They just keep telling us to come the next day and enquire. So many days have passed but nothing is happening," a girl who was in the thick of the protest, Rekha, told ANI.
The state officials, however, refused to comment on the incident or their complaints.
The Mulayam Singh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government in the state had launched a scheme in 2006 to provide financial support to girls from economically weaker sections.
The scheme "Kanya Vidya Dhan" promised to give one lakh girl students a grant of Rs 20,000 each for higher education.
The state government had claimed the scheme as success and even enhanced it to increase the number of beneficiaries and sanctioned an amount of Rs 60 lakh.
