New Delhi: Strongly backing the decision of the CPI-M-led government in West Bengal to hand over farm land in Singur for the Tatas' car project, party General Secretary Prakash Karat on Thursday said that the project is good for industrial development.
''If there is any defect or anomaly, the government is prepared to discuss it. The Singur project is good for industrial development of West Bengal'', he told to PTI.
He also said that the land had not been given at Singur for any commercial purpose and compensation to farmers and bargadars had been paid.
Karat also charged the state Opposition party and some other outside forces for misguiding the people by projecting that an SEZ is coming up at Singur.
“The Left Front government in West Bengal had formulated a land-use policy, which should be the basis for land use for industrial and development projects,” he said.
Karat's remarks assume significance as West Bengal unit of CPI-M has already supported the state government's stand on Singur issue.
Karat suggested major overhaul of Land Acquisition Act of 1894 as also amendment to Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Act and rules.
However, Karat said that the Land Acquisition Act is a very old law and SEZ Act also has to be amended.
