The moonrise time is crucial, as the fast is completed after offering water, known as Arghya, to the moon. 

The auspicious festival of Karva Chauth is being celebrated across India on Sunday, October 20, 2024.  On this day, married women observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands.

Across the country, after sighting the moon, the grand festival of Karwa Chauth came to a close. After offering prayers to the moon, women opened their fast by drinking water from their husbands’ hands, marking the completion of the ritual.

According to news agency ANI, the moon has been sighted in several cities including, national capital Delhi and  Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and his wife performed the rituals on the occasion of Karva Chauth at their residence in Bhopal.

People in Ayodhya were able to see the moon at 8:25 PM, marking a special moment for those celebrating Karva Chauth.

The moon has been spotted in Patna and women performed rituals to complete their fast.

The women in Rajasthan’s Jaipur also performed the rituals after the moon was spotted.

Women completed their fasts in Amritsar, Punjab at moonrise.

The festival is also called Karak Chaturthi, where Karwa or Karak means an earthen pot that is used to offer water to the moon. The earthen pot or Karva is considered very important to the Karva Chauth celebration. The day is devoted to keeping a fast in observance of the husband’s long life and good health. A lot of women participate in prayers and ceremonies on this holy day. According to the Purnimanta calendar, Karva Chauth falls on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik.
