HYDERABAD: Telangana Jagriti president K Kavitha has urged Assembly speaker N Manohar to install a statue of Babasaheb BR Ambedkar, chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee, on the Assembly premises.In a two-page memorandum submitted to the speaker on Friday, she said a statue of the late leader would help legislators draw inspiration from his ideology to make necessary laws for protecting the rights of the downtrodden communities in society.She urged the speaker to take a speedy decision on the people’s demand and see that the statue was installed on the Republic Day (January 26) the day on which the Constitution came into force 61 years ago.The Telangana Jagruti was ready to donate a life-size bronze statue of the leader.Kavitha said a statue of Ambedkar was installed in front of Parliament in Delhi in 1966 and was unveiled by then president S Radhakrishnan, and wanted his statues installed at the Assemblies in all states.She recalled that the central government had issued GO in 1991 allocating Rs 1 lakh to each state to install an Ambedkar statue on the Assembly premises.Kavitha told newsmen the speaker had responded positively to her request.The Telangana Jagriti would conduct an all- party meet and lead an all-party team to the speaker’s office to press their demand, she said.
