Kerala Youth Allegedly Killed in Syria While Fighting for Al-Qaeda

Thiruvananthapuram: A missing youth from Kerala who was suspected to have joined Islamic militants in Syria has reportedly died while “fighting Americans” in the war-torn country.

Abu Thahir had gone missing in 2013 when he travelled to Mecca to perform the Umrah (a pilgrimage). He had reportedly joined Al-Qaeda.

One of Thahir’s relatives in Sharjah reportedly received a voice message which said that Thahrir had died “in the fight against Americans in Syria”.

Thahir is the fourth person from Kerala reportedly killed while fighting for Islamic militants.

On Sunday, another Kerala youth, Bestin alias Yahya, was said to be have been killed in Afghanistan. Yahya was one of the young men who travelled to Afghanistan and suspected to have joined the Islamic State.

Earlier this month another Kerala youth, Muhammed, was reported to have been killed in a US strike in Afghanistan.

In February this year, information reached the relatives of 26-year-old Hafeesudin that he had been killed in a drone attack.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan last year had informed the state assembly that 21 people, including children, were missing, of whom 17 were from Kasargode district and four from Palakkad.
