KANNUR: The CPM took special care to observe the Koothuparamba Martyrs’ Day to mark the death anniversary of five DYFI workers by organising memorial meetings at several centres in the district on Friday. The CPM cadre had always drawn inspiration from the memories of its martyrs, and the ‘martyrdom’ achieved by the five young communists of Koothuparamba had given a lot of political mileage to the party. The ritualistic observation of the death anniversary of the youths who were shot down by the police assumed special significance this time in the wake of a new disclosure made by Congress leader and former Kannur DCC president P Ramakrishnan recently. Ramakrishnan had made an open declaration that it was KPCC general secretary K Sudhakaran MP who persuaded CMP leader and former Cooperation Minister M V Raghavan to visit Koothuparamba braving protests from the DYFI workers on the day of police firing. Raghavan’s belligerence as a minister resulted in the police opening fire at the agitators. The argument of P Ramakrishnan was that it could have been avoided if Sudhakaran hadn’t persuaded Raghavan to visit Koothuparamba. The statement made a lot of embarrassment to the UDF even as it cost Ramakrishnan his job as DCC president. The statement also had another unexpected fall-out. The ebullient Congressman, K Sudhakaran demanded a reinvestigation into the Koothuparamba police firing on the basis of Ramakrishnan’s statement, turning the situation further worse for the KPCC. The CPM had all along been demanding a reinvestigation into the firing incident, and Sudhakaran’s public demand came as a shot in the arm for the party. “A fresh probe has to be made into the incident in the wake of the disclosures made by Ramakrishnan,” said CPM politburo member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan reiterating his party’s stand on the issue. Interestingly, the UDF government chose the easy way out: ignore the demand made by both Sudhakaran and the CPM. Ramakrishnan stood by his statement on the issue. The CPM observed the Martyrs’ Day on Friday with renewed vigour in the wake of the latest political developments. It was Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan who was the star-performer on the day. Probably designed to enthuse its cadre, the CPM organised memorial programmes in all the 16 blocks in the district.
