KOCHI: “Oommen Chandy has taken exemplary measures to ensure the safety of women and children of the State and he is one of the most hardworking chief ministers state has ever had,” Justice V R Krishna Iyer said here on Saturday.Iyer said this while handing over the report of the ‘’Commission on Rights and Welfare of Women and Children’’ to the Chief Minister at the former’s residence.He added that he was confident that Oommen Chandy would do his best to ensure the safety of women and children. Excise Minister K Babu, who was also present at the function, said that the Commission’s report would be taken seriously and immediate steps would be taken on the basis of the report.The Commission reported that strong laws to prevent sexual discrimination against women are absent and that strict action has to be taken against those who opt for female foeticide. Oommen Chandy agreed that in order to stop the rising number of atrocities against women and children, there has to be a basic change in the social mindset. “Based on the report, the state will take actions on two fronts_ stringent laws against perpetrators of cruelty against women and children and the victims of such crimes will be provided befitting rehabilitation,” he said.The occasion gained more prominence as this was Oommen Chandy’s first visit to Krishna Iyer’s residence after taking over as the Chief Minister. Industry Minister P K Kunhalikutty, Kochi Mayor Tony Chammany and Hibi Eden MLA were also present at the function.
