Kumaraswamy Wants Hubbali, Belagavi Airports to be Renamed; Writes to Civil Aviation Minister
The Chief Minister has said that this would be a befitting tribute to the well known freedom fighters citing the importance of both the freedom fighters of the region.

Bengaluru: Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has written to Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu requesting the union government to name Belagavi airport as Kittur Rani Channamma airport and Hubballi Airport as Sangolli Rayanna airport.

The Chief Minister has said that this would be a befitting tribute to the well known freedom fighters citing the importance of both the freedom fighters of the region.

Channamma was the queen of Kittur in the early 1800s and is known to have revolted against the British East India Company leading an armed rebellion in 1824.

Sangolli Rayanna was the army chief in the kingdom of Kittur under Channamma.

Recently, taking a dig at the BJP government, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had said that the Modi government has turned out to be more a "name-changer than a game-changer". Now, it is his own coalition government in Karnataka proposing a name change.

In Uttar Pradesh, the state government has gone on name-changing spree.

"I did what we felt was good. We renamed Mughal Sarai as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayay Nagar, Allahabad as Prayagraj and Faizabad as Ayodhya. Where there is a need, the government will take the steps required," Yogi Adityanath had said.

There is another proposal to rename Sultanpur to Kushbhawanpur.
