Port Of Spain: West Indies' chief selector Joey Carew has hit back at skipper Brian Lara for his "unnecessary" remarks on pitches and selection just after the conclusion of the four-Test series against India.
"They (remarks) were unnecessary. He should have addressed his concerns to the (West Indies Cricket) Board and now he will have to answer to them for those statements," Carew, convenor of the selection panel, was quoted as saying in Trinidad and Tobago Express on Friday.
Asked if Lara's comments were justified in some way, he said, "Since I'm involved in the matter, I would rather not comment on it and leave the decision on how to proceed from here up to the WICB."
Lara had complained about team selection and the state of pitches dished out during the series after West Indies lost the fourth and final Test to India in Kingston to concede the series 1-0.
Lara also revealed that he only discovered he was part of the selection panel a day before the start of the final Test, an appointment he claimed had been ratified since May 28.
The batting genius even threatened he may consider relinquishing his position as captain.
"There's a meeting coming up in a couple of weeks and depending on the selectors, I'll definitely revisit my decision to captain West Indies," he had said.
Other than Carew, Gordon Greenidge and Clyde Butts form the selection panel but Lara did not specify whose reappointment or omission would determine his next move.
