New Delhi: Ministry of Law and Justice has requested the government for an additional slot of 30 minutes in one of the 16 DTH government channels operating under the Swayam Prabha scheme launched last year to air short films and programs in a bid to create legal awareness beyond the law student’s community.
Amid reports that the Ministry was planning to launch a new TV channel, Muralidhar Pandey, Director (J-II) at the Law ministry denied having any knowledge of the Ministry planning to start a new channel and told News18 that “it was a mere proposal to air some legal content in the government owned channels and is currently in the proposal stage.”
“There are no plans for any channel. The government already airs a lot of educational content on the 16 DTH channels being operated under the Swayam Prabha scheme. We have requested for an additional slot of 30 minutes to air short films and documentaries ranging from five to 30 minutes which would help in creating legal awareness not only among law students but also the general public,” said Pandey.
Pandey also denied reports stating that the Law Ministry had written to the HRD Ministry seeking approval to start a new channel.
Last year, the government had approved the Swayam Prabha project to operationalise 32 DTH television channels for providing high quality educational content to all teachers, students and citizens of the country.
Union Human Resource Development Minister, Prakash Javadekar, had also informed the Lok Sabha that the main aim of this initiative was to impart curriculum based knowledge and also air variety of educational content.
The Law ministry in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has also launched a ‘Legal Literacy Video Contest, 2017’ which allows law students, members of the civil society and any individual from across the country to send in short films on topics ranging from rights of differently abled people, child rights, women rights, to fundamental duties and juvenile justice.
The ministry has also proposed awards to the candidates whose entries are selected for being broadcasted.
Pandey told News18 that winning entries will find space in the government owned DTH channels.
“The selected quality entries will be aired on the law and legal studies channel of the Swayam Prabha scheme and in this regard only we have requested an additional slot of 30 minutes,” said Pandey.
