Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton warmed up to the German Grand Prix on Sunday by taking pole position pipping Sebastian Vettel.

Hamilton bettered Michael Schumacher's nine-year-old lap record as team boss Ross Brawn shouted on the radio, 'Top job, top job'. This was his 29th pole position and second in two weeks after the British Grand Prix.

"This is overwhelming. I'd been struggling in practice. The car was undriveable.

"It had been a disaster but the boys in the garage worked hard with lots and lots of changes and got it right.

"And I'm grateful. I owe it all to them. I feel very proud. It's a privilege to be part of such a great team. I hope, with my new set-up, that the pace will be as good and we can given the Red Bulls a run for their money," Hamilton said.

But his team-mate Nico Rosberg was stuck in the garage while Hamilton took the pole position.

"It was quite a shock," Rosberg said. "I didn't see it coming. The team didn't expect the track to ramp up that much. It is a big disappointment. Unbelievable. We just didn't judge it correctly."

An embarrassed Brawn said: "We didn't make the right call. And that's frustrating."

Hamilton was robbed of a podium finish at Silverstone last week for a tyre blast. But this time also it won't be easy as Vettel would be pushing hard for his first-ever home win.

"I tried everything I had," said Vettel, on the front row in Germany for the first time. The car felt fine, even after we struggled a little bit this morning.

"But we are much closer to them here than we were in Silverstone. We have made some progress and are confident for the race.

"But I couldn't catch Lewis. So congratulations to him. It's going to be a tough race. And I look forward to it."
