CHENNAI: Pedestrians on certain T Nagar roads risk their lives every day, thanks to high tension wires strewn carelessly on the roadside. The construction of a storm water drain on Raghavaiah Road has caused the electricity wires to be disturbed. They are now lying scattered on the road and a few slung carelessly from low-hanging branches of trees which line the sides of the road. Tangled with these are the internet cables. In some places, the cables are tied to walls using polythene covers. The scene is the same on Bazullah Road. Kannan, security guard of a restaurant on the stretch says, “Our delivery vans definitely brush against these overhanging wires. Some big cars may also pull down the wires and it is dangerous for our customers.” Also, on Vijaya Raghavan Road, electricity cables from the transformer box lie above ground level. Some parts of GN Chetty Road also have the same problem. Valli, who runs a roadside flower shop, says that she shifted her shop during the rains. “When it rains, I know it is dangerous to be near electric wires. I was already worried if something will happen to me or my customers. I hope the authorities take note of this.”All the roads are those frequented by shoppers and school children by foot. V Kanagasundaram, an advocate who travels along the stretch every day to reach his office on GN Chetty Road, says, “This is highly dangerous for those walking on the roads. By chance if they come in contact with any of these unguarded wires, it can be fatal. It is not a problem for those travelling by vehicles, but seeing such carelessness on the part of the authorities is what irks me.” He also says that letters to the Managing Director of TNEB have also gone in vain.
